Senior Developer for Communicraft Ltd.

October 2004 – July 2005

Freelance Programmer & Consultant trading as Selkie Web & Software Development.

I have primarily worked on ASP and ASP.NET powered database-backed websites, “static” websites, client-side website scripting (“dynamic HTML”) and Microsoft Office macros.

July 2003 – September 2004

Senior Developer for Phoenix Technology Group.

Developed a BAFTA-nominated visitor information installation for the National Galleries of Scotland which uses a REST web service to drive a FlashMX user-interface.

Responsibilities included:

Design, and specification and programming of:
- REST webservice.
- Automated data transfer from central database to installations' databases.
- Automated data transfer from legacy database to installations' databases.
Programming of FlashMX client.

I also acted as an in-house expert on web, HTTP, XML and COM technologies.

August 2000 – July 2003

Lead Programmer and Product Manager for Spin Solutions’ Index™ CMS product.

Responsibilities Included:

Design, specification and direction of:
- Overall architecture and structure.
- Client application.
- Database structure.
- Authorisation and authentication model.
- Content delivery model.
- Server-side COM components used by Index.
Programming of:
- Client application.
- Content delivery model.
- Database structure, and much of it’s procedures.
- Authorisation, authentication and data-access COM components.
- Index’s “base” XSL stylesheets, from which custom XSL stylesheets would be developed.
- Index’s “base” content delivery ASP pages
- Client application’s help-files and installers.
- A spell-check system which was customised to deal well with Irish words used in English text (given our mainly Irish market) without compromising it’s effectiveness at checking other English language text.
Trouble-shooting and providing expertise to other developers on this and other projects.

Technologies used included Visual Basic, COM/ActiveX, XML, XML Namespaces, XML Schema, XSLT, ASP, SQL Server, C, C++, RSS1.0, ADO and the Windows API (in particular the GDI).

January 2000 – August 2000

Senior Developer for Spin Solutions.

Responsibilities Included:

Design and programming of custom web applications and web sites.
Assisting other developers as in-house expert on many web technologies.

August 1998 – December 1999

Developer for Touchtel.

Responsibilities included:

Developing front-end (HTML, CSS and Javascript) and back-end (ASP, SQLServer and VBScript) code for the company’s flagship website GoIreland.com (this site is now owned and operated by another company).
Designing and developing subsidiary sites, and bespoke sites commissioned by other parties.
Information Architecture and User-Experience Design.
Liaising between the Graphic Design and Programming departments.

I am a member of NSAI/ICTSCC/SC4, the Working Group for Irish standardisation in the field of Codes, Character Sets and Internationalisation and the RSS 1.0 Working Group.

I am an active participant in a variety of interest groups, including the W3C’s WAI IG and RDF IG and the IETF Language list (which amongst other things reviews proposed additions to IANA-registered language tags), and an ISOC member.

I had a professional relationship with boards.ie when I worked for them as an employee of Spin Solutions, and remain a participant in the community.

I am a founder of Open, a collection of Irish mailing lists for Irish Web professionals.
